How to add grass to your landscape in Unreal Engine

How to add grass to your landscape in Unreal Engine

You sculpted your landscape, now add some grass!

Adding grass is a two-step process:

  1. First, you want to color your landscape.

  2. Then you want to add the actual grass to it.

Ground Color (Material)

  1. Select your landscape (Make sure you are in "Selection Mode". You can find your landscape in the Outliner or just click it in the viewport.)

  2. In the Details pane > Landscape section > Landscape Material, search for a material such as grass or gravel.

Painting Grass Only In Certain Places

  1. You will first have to import foliage or grass assets into your project. (You can use the Marketplace, Quixel Bridge, or any other source of assets.)

  2. Change "Selection Mode" to "Foliage Mode".

  3. In the Foliage pane, you will see an area that says "+ Drop Foliage Here".
Drag and drop your grass assets already in your project into this area.

    1. Tip: In your Content Browser, click the filter button on top and select "Static Mesh" to help find your foliage.
  4. With at least one foliage asset added, you should now be able to paint that foliage onto the landscape.

    1. If you cannot, make sure:

      1. The "Paint" tool is selected at the top of the Foliage pane.

      2. The foliage asset is checked (hover your mouse over it to see).

  5. Add a mix of grasses and flowers, etc and all assets that are checked (checked by default) will be painted onto the landscape.

Tips

  • Density of all selected assets: Adjust the density under Paint > Brush Options > Paint Density. (1 is the highest)

  • Density on a per-asset basis: Select the asset you want to adjust. Go to Painting section > Density and adjust the property.

  • Erase: Hold Shift to erase (or click the Erase tool)

  • Random Sizes: You can randomize the size of each asset by selecting it > Paining section > Scale X and adjusting the min and max values.

  • Selective Painting: You can uncheck the assets you don't want to paint. This can be helpful if you want flowers in some places or rocks mixed in with your grass.
